Save 25% on Swamp Cooler™ Dog Cooling Vest

by Mary Lou on June 2, 2010

Here’s another item we found for those hot summer days (not yet in the Pacific Northwest, but we can prepare now). This is a clever cooling vest by Ruff Wear, known for their quality products.

The idea is simple, just soak the vest in cold water, wring it out, and fasten around your dog. Evaporative cooling (like an actual swamp cooler) exchanges the dog’s heat with the coolness of the stored water in the coat to keep pooch comfortable.    I’ve used the same idea on myself, using wet clothing and compresses to help reduce the need for air conditioning.  So I can give the human vouch first-hand that the concept works.

KEY FEATURES

  • Uses natural evaporative cooling to keep dogs comfortable
  • Three-layer construction maximizes cooling effects:
    • Top air-mesh layer generates evaporation, releasing heat
    • Middle layer absorbs and stores the cool water
    • Bottom layer cools the dog
    • Auto-lock buckles on each side of the jacket provide easy on/off.

Especially helpful for dark colored or thick coated dogs.  Helps extend playtime and make outdoor summer activities more enjoyable for any dog.  I think it’s also great if you have to travel long distances with your dog in the car and don’t want to have the AC cranked the whole time.

Ooh I like the look of this. What sizes does it come in? I have a large flatcoat who gets boiling at the beach due to his black coat.
