Paw Pad Protection for Summer

by Mary Lou on July 31, 2010

Every season has it’s challenges for dogs, especially to their paws.  Summer creates some unique hardships for dogs’ paws.

SUMMER PAW HAZARDS:

  • Chemicals -pesticides/fertilizers on lawns & gardens.
  • Amplified Heat on walking surfaces -cement, asphalt, sand….etc.
  • Swimming/Wading -salt and chemicals in water (whether it’s the ocean or a puddle) can reduce paws’ natural protectants.

SOLUTIONS.

  1. Keep your dog inside. Yah right -not realistic or fair!
  2. Get your dog footwear. This provides ideal protection if you can afford it and are willing to put on the boots each time you go out.    All Dog Boots has a wide selection of quality dog footwear.  They have a special offer this week for 10% off at checkout using coupon code TWEET.
  3. Use a Paw Protection Soluton to create a barrier between your dog’s pads and these ground hazards.  This is often a waxy-like solution that you apply on the pads frequently to a constant coat to protect.  It has the added benefit of speeding up healing of existing wounds, by helping to keep out debris.  I like Musher’s Secret.  It was developed for sled dogs in Canada, so it has a proven track record for protection in harsh conditions.
